Synagogue Emanu-El was founded as the first Conservative congregation in South Carolina in 1947, an affiliate of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. They are a modern Conservative congregation that emphasizes the continuity of Jewish traditions while being responsive to the challenges of a changing world.

Synagogue Emanu-el celebrated its 75th anniversary in October 2022, and has been located at the current address since 1980.
