“Food and Faith,” a mainstay of Charleston’s interreligious calendar since 2017, is a dialogue between Jewish, Christian, and Muslim leaders.
For the 2024 Food and Faith event, the all-African-American panel will address topics such as forgiveness, the intersection of racial and religious solidarity, racial and religious prejudice, and the fear of confronting that prejudice. Rabbi Tamar Manasseh an African American Rabbi from Chicago will be with us in conjunction with the screening of her documentary "Rabbi on the Block" as part of the Charleston Jewish Filmfest. Rabbi Manasseh is creating a new style of activist Judaism that takes religion out of the synagogue and into the streets, as well as revitalizing an alliance of African Americans and Jews.
Panelists include:
Rabbi Tamar Manasseh, African American Rabbi visiting from Chicago, activist and writer.
Rev. Demett Jenkins, International African American Museum Director of Education and Engagement for Faith Based Communities
Imam Herbert Fraser-Rahim, member of the Masjid Al-Jami Ar-Rasheed in North Charleston, and founder of Lowcountry Alliance for Model Communities (LAMC)
Rev. Nelson Rivers, pastor of Charity Missionary Baptist Church, VP, Religious Affairs, National Action Network (NAN)
Dr. Elijah Siegler, professor of Religious Studies at the College of Charleston, moderator.
All are welcome. Some snacks will be served. More information will be added here as it becomes available, registration required.
