This lecture on the Black Catholic Experience will center on the history of African American Catholics in the Diocese of Charleston with special emphasis on the role of African American Catholic women, both religious and lay, in the areas of evangelism and education; the Church’s position during the period of enslavement of African Americans and Jim Crow; and the current role of African priests as missionaries to Catholics in the Diocese.
