Sacred Tours: Grace Episcopal and Morris Brown AME

The Christian–Jewish Council’s Second Holy City Close-Up & Personal Tours of Charleston was held on Sunday, September 13, 2015. The tour started at Grace Episcopal Church on Wentworth Street, with docents Richard Futch and Tommy Thornhill. We were delighted when Rector, Michael Wright also met with us to provide some historical facts and comments on his beautiful church. He even played a short hymn on the beautiful Grace Church organ. After about one hour we proceeded to the Mount Zion AME Church on Glebe Street. Once there, Docent Alphonso Brown provided an enthusiastic history of AME churches and specifics on his church, and how they have partnered in unique ways with Grace Church, which is around the corner from their church. We were also introduced to the Mount Zion Senior Pastor, Rev. John Paul Brown. The tour concluded with refreshments at the Grace Church Hanahan Room, where we mingled with our co-visitors, met Grace Church staff and were led by Christian-Jewish Council board and Grace Church member Lester Pittman, who showed the group the church bells ringing ground floor room. Our tour included a visit to the area where baptisms are held for young adults aged between 10-12.
