African American Muslims are the oldest and foundational Muslim community in America, whom origins are traced to enslaved African Muslims in America. Despite a limited understanding of its origins and historical roots in the American imagination, this indigenous community has been part of the diverse religious and cultural milieu of South Carolina, Southern and American society. This lecture will provide both a historical and contemporary context of its origins, influence and non-violent and rich tradition that has contributed to all aspects of American society.
This is part of the CIC’s 8-part series titled, African American Religious Diversity and Dialogue. Only one registration is needed for the 8-part series. The complete schedule is below.
The James Sawers Jr. Interfaith Speaker Series is free and open to the public.
